Iconic Colchester landmark changes hands after 28 years and new owners immediately set to work on transforming venue
Demon Xtreme Sports has taken over Rollerworld from Andy Starr after nearly three decades of ownership and have now set their sights on turning the iconic venue into a principle location for skating sports events in the UK. Colchester’s landmark rink – renamed DX’s Rollerworld – marked the changing of hands with an exclusive VIP event on Sunday 2ndDecember. The great and good of the UK’s skating community and alumni from Colchester came together to map out the future of the rink to help attract the biggest sporting occasions in the skating calendar.
The landmark takeover comes after the Colchester impresario, who has resisted previous attempts to buy the venue throughout his tenure, approached the UK’s largest independent extreme sports store as part of a thought-out succession plan for the venue’s future. Demon Xtreme’s Colchester store has now been relocated to the venue as they look to become an all-inclusive iconic sporting venue hosting some of the UK and the world’s premier roller-skating events, such as the World Roller Artistic Skating Championships.
Jason Khan, Founder of Demon Xtreme and new owner of DX’s Rollerworld, said: “We are unbelievably excited and humbled to be taking over Rollerworld as business people, skaters and coaches ourselves plus talking to regular visitors for many years we can bring to reality many of the improvement suggestions. We truly feel there is so much potential within and we want to thank Andy for allowing us the opportunity to take on this iconic Colchester institution after so many years at its helm.
“We have the most amazing world-leading facility right here in Colchester and we need to make the most of it. It’s been great to be able to invite some of the biggest names in the roller-skating universe to showcase their talents and look at working together to bring some of the world’s leading skating events to our fantastic town for everyone to enjoy.”
Andy Starr, Managing Director of Rollerworld, said: “It’s been part of my heart and soul for a long time and I’ve enjoyed the journey along the way. It was important to me to see succession take place and the only people I could imagine sharing my vision and future of progression for the venue are Jason and Anne at Demon Xtreme. We have been all year in the planning of how this will work and their connections within the skating industry will ensure that this much-loved venue is in safe hands and has an exciting future.”
Chris Fox, the sixteen-time British Skating Champion, and long-term advocate of Rollerworld said: “Rollerworld is an unbelievable venue that has everything it needs to be at the pinnacle of our sport. Skating has been great for me and I want more youngsters to embrace this wonderful sport. It was great to be asked to get involved with the Facebook Live surprise announcement of Jason and Anne’s takeover. This venue has so much potential within the industry and now, with Demon Xtreme behind it, the contacts they have to really make this iconic rink the home of the sport I love is just so exciting.”
