Homework is a dynamic aspect of every child’s education, however it can be difficult understanding how to approach it in a way that makes the activity less stressful for both the student and parent. Here are some tips to help make doing homework a positive experience for your child:
1. Location is everything: Establish a consistent time and place to complete homework. Students thrive when they have a routine and are able to mentally prepare themselves to complete any and all assigned work. Choose a distraction-free setting (to the best of your ability). Make sure no matter what part of the home you choose it is well lit and conducive to studying.
2. Get Organised: Take advantage of all the back to school specials this season in order to shop for any and all supplies your child needs. Common supplies include paper, pens, pencils, and scissors. Being disorganised or lacking necessary materials can inevitably prolong the completion of homework.
3. Schedule break-time: An important aspect of completing homework is to schedule breaks. Plan a snack break every hour or so. Sometimes assigned work may feel overwhelming to the student, but the incentive to work in shorter chunks can make homework more manageable.
Remember that every child is unique and may require a different combination of factors in order to utilise their mind and energy to create the best work possible. Listening to your child and their needs can help ensure that doing homework involves as little stress as possible and gets the student excited to learn more!
