King George’s Playing Fields is a large centrally located park offering the following facilities:

• formal gardens; exquisite in spring time and beautiful all year round
• children’s play area
• a unique garden for the blind with many flowering and non-flowering plants which appeal to senses other than sight
• playing fields for football, cricket, rugby and kick about areas
• bowling greens with 12 rinks
• crazy golf
• skate park
• cafe
• excellent facilities for the disabled and able-bodied alike.

The entrance to Hartswood Golf Course is also to be found in this park as is that to Hartswood itself, a wood of 73 acres where an access trail makes it easy for people to use, including those with disabilities. There is a footpath which runs through Hartswood and links up with Thorndon Country Park and Little Warley and Childerditch Common.

Lost Property

If you mislay a personal item in King George’s Playing Fields please ask the park warden who will be on site from 7:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday and 7:30am to 5:30pm at weekends. You can also enquire at the Cafe in the Park as your item may have been handed in there.

Skate Park

Over the course of 2012 and 2013 the Council worked in partnership with the Brentwood Skatepark Association to transform and renovate the existing aged and dilapidated ramps. In consultation with the users of the existing site and the members of the Skatepark Association an exciting and challenging concrete park was designed and constructed. The facility is designed for users of all ages and abilities with the bowl ready to ride with a super smooth finish. The small tight quarter leads into the shallow end of the bowl via a big pumpbump that flows straight into the tombstone extension. Coming off the extension you can hit the hip into the deep end or miss it out and carve for speed through one of the many pockets. A transition riders dream with some concrete bunding around the bowl that creates some extra features like a jump ramp out of the bowl and a coping-less quarter pipe.

In 2013 contractors completed a street based second phase. This second phase compliments the existing transition elements really well and brings added flow to the park. The Street course links to the existing bowl with an escalating quarter to bank blend, this gives speed to hit all the obstacles on the driveway sending you towards the flat bank hip. This second phase brings a new dynamic to the park and was designed to accommodate an optional third a final phase in the future.

The skate park is free to use and open to all riders of varying ability all year round. The use of protective pads and head gear is strongly advised and users of lesser experience or ability are asked to be mindful of other users and spectators around them on site. Please also ensure you are both confident enough to use the equipment and physically able to climb out of the bowl area before entering it.

All users use the facility at their own risk and children should be supervised at all times.

Paddling Pools

The paddling pools at King George’s Playing Fields are no longer operating due to them reaching the end of their economic life and the cost of retaining and replacing the aged pumping and filtration systems along with the repairs needed to the lining of the pools.

King George’s Playing Fields is due to undergo a transformation as part of Brentwood Borough Council’s Leisure Strategy.

Car Parking

There are 4 car parks within King Georges Playing Fields.

These car parks can be accessed through two entrances; the first is located on Hartswood Road and the second is located on Ingrave Road.

Car parks A, B & C are accessible from Ingrave Road while car park D is accessible from Hartswood Road.

Free Parking is available in in all 4 car parks located at King Georges Playing Fields for up to 4 hours, with no return for 2 hours.

Should you wish to stay for longer than 4 hours; please park in car park A or car park D where you can purchase an all day ticket for £5.00

A flat fee of £15.00 is applicable to coaches wishing to park.

Opening times for the Hartswood Road car park are as follows:

7.45am to 5pm (Winter) and 7.45am to 8pm (March to October).

Crazy Golf – Rascal Bay Adventure Golf Course at King George’s Playing Fields, is now open. This is run privately and is not linked to the Council.
